Two young lorikeets are taking in their first mornings out of the nest, small and bright against the distant ranges in the pale green hush of the fog, while their parents hold either side and watch over them without fuss. There is pride in the way the adults keep their place, and some reluctance in it too, a bit like us walking our children to the school gate and wanting one more minute before we let go. My Rainbow Lorikeet Painting is about that pause before the day properly begins, when the world has turned out to be far bigger than expected and there is still so much left to learn.

Painted in oils on Italian linen canvas and signed on the front. The original is stretched over a 35mm frame and hangs as it is, unframed, and at 610 by 1020mm it suits a tall wall or a narrow stretch beside a doorway.
