A rainbow bee-eater on a bare branch, nothing else in the frame, and all that colour with nowhere to hide. The white around him is doing half the work. It is a simple, confident image that suits a wall where a busier picture would be too much, and it holds its own at small sizes.
Bee-eaters are one of the few birds that genuinely justify the word iridescent. Green, gold, blue and that black band across the eye like something applied deliberately. He sat still for approximately as long as it took to look at him properly.
This Watercolour Bird Painting is one of a small group of watercolours in the collection. They hang beautifully as a set of two or three, and there is a piece on my blog about arranging art at home if you are working out a grouping.
