She moves first and they follow, nine of them, strung out behind her across water so still it barely knows they are there. The light is only just up. Nobody is in any danger. It is the most reassuring thing I have ever painted, and it does something gentle to a room that is hard to explain until you live with it.
Ducklings follow within a day of hatching, and she never once looks back to check. That is the part that stayed with me. The confidence of it. She simply knows they are behind her, and they simply are.
