A tiny blue bird has stopped beside a single bloom, and for about four seconds the whole garden is about him. That is roughly how long a fairy-wren stays anywhere. Getting one to hold still on a wall feels like a small theft, and it is why this painting makes people happy out of proportion to its size.
Variegated fairy-wrens weigh less than a ten cent coin. The blue is not pigment at all, it is the way the feather is built, which is why it changes as the bird turns and why it is so difficult to paint convincingly.
The original oil painting was a finalist at the Brookfield Show in 2022 and exists once only. This Blue Wren Wall Art print is a lovely first piece to own, and I have written about how it was painted if you would like to see the stages.
